Fantasy Hockey: Wildbloggers

This is a 10 team league of Wild bloggers, as the name suggests. Some overlap with the Russoville gang but this time I finally let it autodraft for me and I'm pretty happy with the results, at least of the ones where I know anything about the players. Some I'm totally unfamiliar with.

1. (7) Jarome Iginla RW
2. (14) Pavel Datsyuk C
3. (27) Olli Jokinen C
4. (34) Chris Osgood G
5. (47) Ryan Miller G
6. (54) Alexander Frolov LW
7. (67) Nikolai Zherdev RW
8. (74) Michael Cammalleri LW
9. (87) Ed Jovanovski D
10. (94) Niklas Kronwall D
11. (107) Alex Goligoski D
12. (114) Pavel Kubina D
13. (127) Patrick Marleau C
14. (134) Jason Blake LW
15. (147) Martin Havlat RW
16. (154) Jonathan Bernier G

Obviously, Bernier is getting dropped as he's been sent down to the AHL. I've already put my add/drop request in but it won't take effect until Thursday and will work based on waiver order, which I should be third or fourth, so fingers crossed. In a league this small, there are some darn good players left on the roster. Maybe not fantasy studs, but guys who are worthy to come off the pine occasionally.

You're fourth in the waiver order.

Which ones are you unfamiliar with?

I let mine autodraft by default. I should maybe go look and see what my team is...

Kev, I don't know know anything about Frolov. I know Zherdev is on that #2 line with Dubinsky and Voros for the Rangers (which I fully expect to flame out any moment now because that what AV did in Minny). I have not heard much good about Squid (please tell me that's Cammalleri's nickname!!!) other than people are hoping the change of scenery is good for him in Calgary. I know Hipchecks calls Jovo "Damn Jovo" and I don't think she means it in a good way. I know nothing about Marleau. Blake had cancer or something, right? Is that all over with? Know nothing about Havlat other than what you told me about him being injured a lot.

That's all. :) Other than praying to the fantasy hockey god that the three drafters before me don't take the player I want to swap Bernier for. *pretty please*

Who do you want? ;) My waiver pick's worse so I'm not about to claim him.

Brief analyses of your guys:

Frolov - talented young winger, scored 67 pts in 71 games last year, was hurt with... I think a groin injury? I can't remember. He's one of the guys they are (or should be) building around. But, he's a King, so his +/- won't be all that good. I've got him on one team (though that was autodrafted and I want to trade him, but only because i have three Kings.)

Zherdev - headcase who never realized his potential in Columbus and I don't think New York is the place for him, but he's doing okay so far.

Cammalleri - well he was another young guy for the Kings who tore up the NHL early last season with a bunch of goals but then tailed off and got hurt, but he scored 30+ two seasons ago. Think he scored the other night for Calgary. Don't know if Squid is his nickname, but I'm not forgiving you for that joke you made.

Jovanovski - honestly I can only imagine the "Damn Jovo" is from wishing he was on Hipchecks team. I've got him on one or two teams and would take him on more. He quarterbacks Phoenix's power play and had 12 goals and 51 points last season. He'll shoot a lot too, which is beneficial for the league.

Marleau - Well, some Wild folks want to trade Gaborik for Marleau. Had 28+ goals in four straight seasons, including two 30+ goals, but struggled ALL last season. Had a dreadful year but is sure to bounce back.

Havlat - oodles of talent, hard to stay on the ice. And I mean OODLES. 59 points in 67 games, 68 in 68 (31 goals), 16 in 18, 57 in 56, 27 in 35 last season. Notice that's almost a point a game, but also notice how few games he plays. Getting him as late as you did I think is good; if he's healthy and produces like he's shown he can, he's a great pick for that late. If he spends more time with the trainers than his teammates, all you lose is a 15th rounder.

Blake - as far as I know, the cancer is gone. He'll also shoot a lot and frankly, he's one of the only guys on Toronto who's capable of scoring. He might not be a bad player to have, but it IS Toronto.

The Fro is like a somewhat less talented, MUCH less bitchy version of Gaborik, groin pulls and all.

Ms. Conduct  October 13, 2008 at 1:25 AM

Jovo IS on Hip's team. She's my token Phoenix reader. :) Maybe she'll chime in on why he's Damn Jovo...

I'm not saying who I want! But he fills the Team Hottie role with room to spare. Shhh...

Come on, you know you laughed. Or groaned with a smile re: Marinara...

Thanks for the player summaries. Lots of "buts" on this team, eh? I may have to change my team's name to Ms. Conduct's Hockey Buts.

Kirsten, I love when you talk about Gaby. Makes the hate for him I feel stirring in my gut seem utterly reasonable. In fact, one of my goals before going to sleep tonight is to order a new Wild t-shirt to supplant my current Gaby one.

KiPA - Kevin in PA  October 13, 2008 at 2:54 AM

Hmm, to say Frolov is a "somewhat less talented" Gaborik suggests to me that he's not good. Sure, Frolov isn't as talented as Gaborik but he's still got skillz.

Having said that, having him as your No. 1 LW (though maybe Cammalleri becomes that) isn't the ideal situation.

And sorry, but no, I didn't laugh..I just sorta hung my head and did a /facepalm. Sorry!

If Hip is a Phoenix fan, then maybe that becomes clearer; we all get frustrated with various members of our team for doing something stupid.

I think your team will be mostly fine. Good centers, decent wings (except Iginla, who's more than decent), D might be a little shaky at least until Goligoski gets the feel for it (and he looks like he belongs).

Ms. Conduct  October 13, 2008 at 6:19 AM

k-jac, okay fine. But I think Squid is still the best nickname ever and I demand that you agree (fully knowing that you won't but whatever... nobody ever does what I say).

I interpret "slightly less talented than Gaby" as "still pretty damn talented." I wonder if bitchiness, if it were measurable, would count for or against you in fantasy hockey, a la PIM...

Ms. Conduct  October 13, 2008 at 6:22 AM

Er, I mean "somewhat less talented"... same diff. Mostly.

Kirsten  October 13, 2008 at 9:27 AM

I'm all about helping people let themselves feel hate towards Gaborik. The more I hear about him, the less I like him.

I'm writing a post about him that I will finish soon. One I think you will find to your liking.

That's what I meant by somewhat less talented. There is no denying Gaby is talented, it's just his other lack of qualities over ride that fact.

hipcheck  October 13, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Ok, I typed out a whole huge long thing about Jovo and I don't think it went through. There was an error.

I will re-type tomorrow if it didn't go through and also give some thoughts on Jokinen. I have to go to sleep now. I was on a two day hockey high and I am crashing now...

hipcheck  October 14, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Ok, Jovo...
last season Jovo had this nasty habit of turning the puck over at the blueline, sometimes leading to goals. At other times, he was slow to react (like he wasn't paying attention) and would skate slowly after the puck, sometimes letting a player from another team to skate past him and beat him to it.

So far this season, he really hasn't really done any of that. I know it has been only preseason and 2 regular season games. I am hoping he can maintain his new game.

Also, expect him to get plenty of PP time. He will play the point for about 1:30 of all PP. Also, he is always paired with a stay at home dman, allowing him to jump into the play. I believe he was in the top 5 goals by dmen last season. I would expect him to get plenty of assists with a fair number of goals.

Jokinen. Ok, I was a little worried about him in the pre-season. He didn't seem to be as good as promised. But the first two regular season games he started racking up the points. He had a goal and 2 assists in the first two games.

I expect he will also get quite a bit of PP time and play with the likes of Doan, Mueller and Turris. I have heard he played the point in Florida, but I don't think he has done that here yet.

I hope that helps and isn't too late!

Ms. Conduct  October 14, 2008 at 11:52 PM

Ah, thank you Hip! Sounds like his flaws aren't necessarily ones that will affect anything other than his +/- fantasy-wise. As long as he's scoring goals, I'm happy.

I saw that Jokinen is starting to pick up some points. I think he avoided the curse as well, which is good since I have him twice, too.
