You love Carcillo. Admit it.

Watching tonight's game 2 and reading the tweets and seeing the stories being written, I can't believe how much fuss there was about Dan Carcillo playing in this game, before, during, and after. *chirp chirp chirp*

As much as everyone says they hate Carcillo and all those similar NHL villains, you love it and you know it. You love having someone to hate. Because that's how passion works. You have passionate love for your team, your guys, your way. But you have to have the flip side, right? You have to have those players you love to hate. Avery. Carcillo. Tucker. Pronger.

Before Avery got his lobotomy and became a boring douchebag rather than the interesting prick he used to be, that was always my stance. I love that the guy brings an edge to the game that most other guys are too stuffy or noble or well-behaved to bring. Would I want everyone doing that? Of course not. But a little shit stirring is good for a culture and every great story needs the antagonist.

Sure, the game is beautiful and is theoretically "enough," but for those of us immersed in it day after day, for those of us who tell the stories of the game, who live and die with each shot or save or trade or draft, we want these guys. We want them to be jerks, we want them to succeed, we want them to fail, we want karma to kick their lousy asses. It's great theater.

It's the bleu cheese crust on the filet mignon of hockey. It doesn't NEED it but sometimes it's a delicious, odorous change of pace.

The Flyers already have Pronger. Carcillo is overkill. There should be a one-douchebag-per-team rule.

Believe in Number 13! Maybe a lucky one for the Flyers!

Hmmm... I don't mind Carcillo. His ability to make himself look like an ass is legendary. Avery is a d-bag, and always was a d-bag, but at least he was entertaining.

There are certain guys out there that cross the line: Cooke, Rutuu, Bertuzzi. I don't love to hate them, I just hate them. Some guys give the game a black eye, and they are them.

Pronger's stunt last night was childish and dishonorable, but it sure seems to get him attention and pull the story away from the Hawks being up 2-0 in the series. I think he knew what he was doing and pulled it off perfectly. Still a lot of fun to pick on him for it:

I love the pests in the league, love to hate them, just so long as they don't cross the line.

But isn't part of the fun drawing The Line and watching them dance around it? If they didn't cross it occasionally, what would be the point of having it? It's all very zen if you think about it.

Totally love Carcillo. My problem with Avery is that he is a douchebag off the ice, too. The shit he pulls on the ice is just bizarre. Carcillo chirps, plays to the crowd and gets in your face, love it. I don't hear reports of him being an ass off the ice or carrying purses and shit, but maybe I just haven't heard it.

For some reason the antics of Pronger cracked me up. I'm sure if it were my team or a puck that Moose wanted, I'd hate Pronger, but it just cracked me up.

As much as it kills my inner Pens fan to admit this, I really do have a soft spot for Carcillo. He's a huge d-bag on the ice and I love him for it, but he keeps it on the ice. That's why I can like him and loathe Avery. He knows when to drop the d-bag persona and behave like a decent human being.

They don't call Carcillo the 'Car Bomb' for nothing, Ms. C.

Yes, he's overkill, but then, so is Pronger and a few other Flyers (Hartnell, Timmonen, Carter all come to mind). So were Schultz, Clarke, Dornhoefer, Kelly and most of the rest of that group back in the glory days of Philadelphia hockey. They were all larger than life.

My only question is: If he is such a good agitator, why did they get rid of him in Phoenix? Would the Coyotes have done better if they had Carcillo drawing penalties?

IMO: I doubt it.

I love that nickname.... Carbomb... I mean, really....

Awesome post, great points!

This is the beauty of sports at its core, I believe. The love/hate relationships with players and the good/bad guys are why everyone can identify with sports.

I miss Carcillo. And you know what... he is a total sweetheart of the ice.
